Are there any restrictions on security deposits in California?

Yes, California law restricts security deposits to a maximum of two months’ rent for unfurnished properties and three months’ rent for furnished properties. Landlords must return the security deposit within 21 days after the tenant moves out, minus any deductions for damage or unpaid rent. A detailed itemized statement of deductions must be provided if any portion of the deposit is withheld.
